KIDS IN THE KITCHEN

The one year old

  • Has improved their eye, hand, mouth coordination by eating finger foods and using a spoon

  • Enjoys looking at pictures of food while you name them

  • Likes to imitate cooking activities with plastic or metal cooking utensils

  • Can learn about the texture of foods by feeling – a fuzzy peach, a smooth apple, a rough cantaloupe

The two year old is able to:

  • Peel grapefruits, bananas, tangerines with their fingers

  • Spread peanut butter on crackers or toast

  • Help set the table

  • Toss a salad or mix shredded cabbage with dressing to make coleslaw

  • Enjoy playing with toy dishes

  • Name the foods in a meal or name the foods in a book

The three year old is able to:

  • Use a cookie cutter to help make cookies

  • Select pictures of foods that are appropriate for breakfast, lunch, snack

  • Match pictures of foods with the correct food group

  • Set the table without much help

  • Wash things – the table, the counter, unbreakable dishes

  • Learn to pour liquids from a container (that’s not too full) into a glass or cup
